Vegan Block Party: Asking Ridiculous Questions and Getting Real Answers

One of my favorite ways to connect with people is to ask a question that seems completely ridiculous, then listen closely enough to discover something surprisingly meaningful in the answer.
That's basically the premise of my trip to Vegan Block Party in Fort Lauderdale. I grabbed a microphone, walked around the festival, and started asking plant-based people the kinds of questions vegans hear constantly, along with a few nobody should reasonably be expected to answer.
How long have you been vegan? Where do you get your protein? What if the word vegan needed a rebrand? The answers were funny, unexpected, and wonderfully varied. One person talked about going plant-based because of a family health experience. Others explained their favorite foods, their fitness routines, and why the protein question is less mysterious than people make it.
I've been vegan for years, but what I love about the community is how different everybody's story can be. Some people lead with ethics. Some lead with health. Some just discovered that they can eat amazingly well without animal products. Apparently some of us also like interrogating complete strangers for entertainment.
Comedy helps me make those conversations accessible. People laugh, the defenses come down, and suddenly we're talking about real choices and real lives.
And yes, if you ask enough vegans about protein, you may accidentally end up learning something.
